However, based on our testing, Samsung seems to have addressed the main flaws with prior foldables, notably a quality construction and vivid display that are comparable to other $999 smartphones.
How does it compare to the Motorola Razr and the preceding Z Flip? The third generation is more durable, with a sturdier construction and a screen that doesn’t take you down a path of worries. The Z Flip 3 is essentially a regular smartphone that simply happens to fold, unlike earlier foldables that didn’t feel safe in the hand or produced loud creaking noises in normal use. Those looking for the ideal camera configuration, however, would be best served by the iPhone 12 Pro or Galaxy S21, which both include a telephoto lens. It’s remarkable, but we should point out that it lacks dust resistance, which is perhaps more important in the case of the hinge. But you can get the Z Flip 3 wet – we dipped it in a pail of water a few times and used it outdoors in the rain without damaging it.

When fully extended, the Z Flip 3 feels as solid as any other standard-size smartphone, including the iPhone 12 and Galaxy S21, with no additional flex or bend. It’s a far more robust design with tougher materials, yet it still weights 183 grams.
Samsung’s hidden hinge is still in use. When the smartphone is closed, the metal band with Samsung engraved into the top of the device is visible. The hinge is covered by the two main parts of the Z Flip 3 when you open it. The Z Flip 3 is still a little harder to open with only one hand, and the slick surface doesn’t help matters much. The display still has a crease in it, which you’ll notice while using the phone, but we’ll go into it more below.

At just 1.1 inches, the cover screen on the original Z Flip was a novelty. It could be used as a stock ticker to display your alerts or to rapidly display the time, but it was mostly ineffective.
Samsung made some minor enhancements with the Z Flip 3. The screen has been almost quadrupled in size and now includes a date and time display that can be synced with your Galaxy Watch 4 or cycle through a series of animals. A swipe from left to right brings up your alerts, which you can now browse through and open to read, but it forces you to use the Z Flip to perform tasks like responding.
Swiping from right to left allows you to navigate among various widgets. Some of them can be customized, but it’s just a selection of Samsung experiences, and it’s not accessible to third parties just now. You can use it to manage media playing (and yes, this includes Spotify), check the weather, set a timer, get brief health data, and see your calendar, among other things. While it is convenient to look at a notice without completely activating the phone, the fact that you can’t react right away on that screen is a little annoying. The screen’s goofy but useful role as a selfie viewfinder remains, and you can swipe up or down to switch between wide and ultrawide views, or even right to left for video. It’s nice, but with a 1.9-inch viewfinder, the experience is still constrained. When you capture a picture or video with the phone folded up, the person you’re shooting can see the framing on the small screen, which is a better use case for the cover screen.

The main 6.7-inch Infinity Flex Display, which is bright with colors and packed with details on any given screen, is revealed when the Z Flip 3 is folded open. The Z Flip 3 5G has a 120 Hz refresh rate display, which is the new norm – with the exception of Apple, which uses 60 Hz. This standard refers to how many times the screen can refresh itself in a second, and when enabled, the screen seems buttery smooth. Scrolling through pages, viewing videos, and playing games all seem more natural.
When you scroll, the hinge produces a seam in the middle of the display, which you will notice. It’s not the end of the world, but it’s something to keep in mind when choosing a foldable.
The 6.7-inch display of the Z Flip 3 is fantastic for day-to-day use. In terms of quality and results, it’s on par with comparable flagships at the $999 price point. However, the screen isn’t completely composed of glass; it’s made up of a layer of Samsung’s Ultra Thin Glass technology. The last layer is made of plastic, and it feels like a screen protector on top of a regular glass display. In our tests, however, we did not create any scratches or problems with the display.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 runs Android 11 with a Samsung user interface on top, much like a full-size smartphone. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 CPU with 8GB of RAM, which is the same as the Galaxy S21. In this respect, it is unquestionably a leader.
Even while doing intensive activities, we never noticed the device jitter or slow down on the main screen. The Z Flip 3 feels as quick as other top smartphones and will most likely maintain that performance in the future. And the version of Android used by Samsung is very familiar. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 may be charged quickly using a brick, but you’ll have to carry your own.
The Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G supports 5G connection, as the name implies. The good news is that the Samsung Z Flip 3 supports Sub-6 and mmWave networks. In the United States, these two bands are the most well-known. While mmWave is more difficult to come by, it provides lightning-fast speeds. We got close to 1,000 MBps on the Z Flip 3 while testing with a Verizon SIM and in direct line of sight with a mmWave cell site in NYC. 4G LTE, which is closer to 100 MBps or 200 MBps, is crushed by this.
Sub-6 5G is more probable in your area, although this simply increases capacity rather than the showy speeds. You’ll be able to listen to either band right now if you live near them. Otherwise, it’s a way of future-proofing your Z Flip 3 purchase.

12-megapixel wide-angle lens: This wide lens is useful for portrait photos and does an excellent job of capturing a scene correctly. We didn’t see any noticeable hue skewing. Optical image stabilization is also included in this lens, resulting in fewer fuzzy images.

12-megapixel ultrawide camera: The ultrawide camera allows you to capture more in each picture and is a fun way to frame a building or anything else you’re photographing. In our tests, it performed well.
Overall, the Z Flip 3 produced some excellent pictures. Individual hairs were picked up with reasonable ease in photos of our poodle, Georgia, or Bernadoodle, Charlie, and the picture was not overly smoothed. Natural landscapes, likewise, did not seem distorted or densely detailed. Portrait Mode worked well here, with the Z Flip 3 picking up hairlines and detecting depth accurately. The only lens lacking from this kit is a telephoto lens, and at $999, we’d like to see a real optical zoom option. Finally, the integrated 10-megapixel selfie camera performs well. However, since it is not an ultrawide lens, it may be more difficult to fit a large group of people into the frame. Still, the Z Fold 3’s under-display 4-megapixel camera captures more details.

There’s a lot to appreciate about the Z Flip 3 thanks to its bigger — and more useful — cover screen, water resistance, smooth internal display, and improved design. Is it now considered mainstream? Yes, in the sense that it is a safe bet for someone looking for a foldable smartphone.
However, there is no need to convert to a foldable smartphone just yet. Flex Mode is useful, but it isn’t available in every program. It’s also not a must. The Z Flip 3’s small design is more appealing, and if you’re weary of large smartphones that don’t fit in your pockets or are a pain to carry, know that you’re not sacrificing much by choosing it.
You’re losing out on a third camera lens and battery life that lasts all day. And that’s the real accomplishment here: choosing the Galaxy Z Flip 3 means you’re not giving up anything you’d expect from a smartphone. With additional color choices, two screens, and a discussion starter, you may even reach the top.
