Apps like Covid-19 help people find like-minded individuals in their area who have also been vaccinated. This is a good start, but the app still has its limitations, and more work needs to be done to make it useful for everyone.
Apps Help Users Show Covid-19 Vaccination Status, Search for Like Minds is a blog post that discusses how to search for people who have the same vaccinations as you.
More smartphone applications are introducing features that allow users to show their Covid-19 vaccination status and find other users and companies that support vaccinations.
Grindr LLC, a dating app, said that beginning in September, users will be able to add their vaccination status to their profiles and limit their searches to discover other individuals who have been vaccinated. Vrbo, a vacation-home rental business owned by Expedia Group Inc., intends to let hosts on its website to publish their criteria for guests to be Covid-19-vaccinated or tested this autumn.
OpenTable Inc., whose dining-reservation service already allows restaurants to post Covid-19 vaccine requirements, added a “certified for entrance” tag this month that customers may get by presenting evidence of vaccination, for example, to any participating restaurant. Starting next month, individuals will be able to acquire the tag by getting a digital vaccination card through Clear, a Secure Identity LLC platform.
Through a collaboration with Clear, restaurant reservation company OpenTable will soon be able to provide users with a “certified for admission” badge.

Similar moves have been made by companies such as Hinge Inc. and Match Group LLC’s Tinder, which allow users to share their vaccination status on their profiles, and Yelp Inc., which added two filters that allow users to search for restaurants with fully vaccinated staff or businesses that require proof of vaccination from customers.
Some of the new features are meant to assist people avoid direct contact with unvaccinated persons, while others are intended to help people comply with local governments’ new vaccination requirements in the wake of the Covid-19 outbreak linked to the Delta strain. For indoor activities, cities such as New York and San Francisco now demand evidence of immunization.
“It’s really about trying to be the most helpful tool we can be to our restaurants and also to our customers, because things are changing so quickly,” said Debby Soo, CEO of Booking Holdings Inc.’s OpenTable. Ms. Soo said, “We’re trying to make it as simple as possible for people to go out and eat or get takeaway, and for businesses to pivot and survive this epidemic.”
According to digital experience designers, the proliferation of “vaccinated” badges on user profiles may encourage others to be vaccinated, a process known as “social proof.”
“If more people potentially demonstrate that they’re vaccinated, that could have a really good impact on encouraging other people to get vaccinated, because of that social proof—you start to see that that’s becoming the norm,” said Amy Lokey, senior vice president and head of global design at ServiceNow, Inc., a cloud-based platform that helps businesses manage digital workflows.
Many of the features, however, depend on individuals self-reporting their vaccination statuses, allowing opportunity for users to lie, according to the designers.

Alex Levin, founding partner and strategy director of L+R, a design and digital consulting company, stated, “It’s almost like the floodgates are open for potential bad players.”
On the other hand, business owners may not think to update their Yelp or OpenTable profile sites with their vaccination requirements right once, instead relying on a physical notice on the entrance, according to Mr. Levin.
According to Albert Fox Cahn, founder and executive director of the Surveillance Technological Oversight Project, a New York-based privacy and human rights organization, “the newest technology solutions may wind up going by the wayside as Covid-19 exposure-notification applications did.”
Many of the features, though, are a step in the right direction, according to Mr. Cahn.
“One of the wonderful things about some of the vaccination credentials on dating apps and restaurant apps is that we realize it’s a trust exercise,” he added. “We understand that being vaccinated is about fostering a feeling of communal solidarity.”
